Democracy is an ideal that i personally dont believe in. Unfortunately there is no better form out there that can be adapted.
Democracy to me is that people should govern themselves. That sounds good. You don't have someone who inherits power and there is maybe less chance of someone abusing power. Thats great. Unfortunately that is not what happens. There is Politics. a group of people are elected to represent the differerent people out there. That group can collectively feel they know best and are acting in the best interest of people. One highly respected person can influence the whole group. If enough people believe its right then maybe it is. Thats certainly the case in democracy. The are rules that can be enforced or tried to be enforced but with gray areas. Its wrong to kill unless in self defence. i don't know.
What does democracy have to do with Wits? Well students have the right to express themselves. If enoough students say they dont want the fees increase maybe it wont happen. How do you get enough students to say they don't want the fees increase? force them from lectures, possibly decrease their chnces of passing and actually coming back to worry about the incresed fees. I am not sure what the fees increase is about but if theres a good reason then maybe they should increase. If the reason is not good then don't force students from classes to support you. I personally only ever look at Maths during the lecture and if that lecture is disturbed then i'll have a hard time trying to study because i won't have the input the lecturerer gave. Don't stop a guy who's trying to make a living from going to see his family just because he works for Wits. Civilised. Are we better than animals? What makes us better? My lecture where that was being discussed was distured today.
