Ubuntu my Operating systems of choice.
I started using ubuntu last year and I personally loved it. I used it on my first ever personal computer and the only problem i had was that I didn't have internet connection. I got connected to the internet and I was relatively happy with it. Ubuntu gnome was great for general use i could do anything with it. Well almost, anything else I would use Wits computers.
Whats this post about? well ubuntu is growing in number of users I think and that's great but a recent conversation with a boy who tried ubuntu after I had recommended it who has now went back to windows and a website that completely disses Linux has made me think: Ubuntu is not for human beings yet. It is not simple enough yet. It certainly has potential but unfortunately with proprietary software companies making better and better software I think linux is gonna have a hard time.
Proprietary software
Opera and Apple, two fantastic software makers. I can't speak for Apple as I have never used it but Opera i have used and out the box it was better than Firefox for my needs. side track:What do i need? opera link and thats it. I don't browse that much on the desktop I find it easier to read on my small cellphone screen and with operamini i get to do that then any things I would like to read on the computer or maybe a big picture I can just bookmark and read from opera link.side track end
I think proprietary software maker (except maybe Microsoft who I have a feeling are going to release something massive soon, ab it may not be named windows. Bill gates has retired) see the importance of their user input. I use to be a reader of the opera mini forums and I would read the wish lists and then some of those wishes would be granted. Granted hypothetically if opera was open source it would have those wishes granted sooner but when opera grants them its great, contrary open source relies on the people and some one said: The developers for the leading software giants in their spare time will develop open source, that seems kinda true but i know its not. Well not the way it sounds anyway.
Open Source
Okay i don't wanna go on about how Proprietary software is great and better than some open source software. I love the idea of open source. Simple, code should be made available for anyone to do what ever they want with it and when they change it they should make those changes available to everyone. Linus made a mad scientist analogy. The scientist takes linux, makes software that allows him to take over the world and shoot everything up. Open source says he must make that software available freely so that we can also take over the world.
That to me as an engineering student sounds great. I can learn the programming language of my favorite software and then download the code then do as I want. Tweak it then give my tweaks away. I can tell MY computer to do what I want it to do. It is MY computer. Linux gives me that freedom and most people don't care about that freedom and after trying to convince them of that i have decided that LEAVE FREE SOFTWARE to those who understand it. There is nothing wrong with your software, I want to be an engineer so that I can make magic. I will thus make magic for these people who want to think computers are smarter than their calculators.
solution
I said proprietary software in most respects is better than open-source. The iphone is an example of a proprietary platform and I can see it drawing big developers. They can get paid for their software. Money draws developers and that's why I think Google and if others like it exist can help open source. Android can take back developers from iPhone. I wouldn't get an iPhone even if i could afford it and i didn't have a problem with vodafone. I would get the openMoko. I read in the times that Bill Gates saw software as separate from hardware long before most people and that allowed him to exploit it. I think Android and openMoko will do the same. i will be able to install a great operating system on my phone and do what i want with it. This is probably already possible but I think Android will make it more common. Oh yah back to google and the like being helpful to open source: Google offered money for people to start developing for android. I WANTED TO PROGRAM SOMETHING AFTER THAT. Google can offer money to developers and because of convenience, i will buy open source software. unfortunately the business aspect of open source is very hard but Android hopefully will be example to other open source companies. Make the software look great, UBUNTU DOES NOT SEEM TO GET THIS!!! make it look great by default. The software may support all the hardware in the world but for someone like me that does not matter. I have simple software and i want GUI for everythiing... OKAY i will shut up now as I have too much to say... and i am mostly misinformed.
